Bio: Dr Brien (Ben) Norton was Associate Professor and Director of International Programs for the Department of Rangeland Resources at Utah State University (USA) where he taught several rangeland management courses before joining the research staff at ICARDA. He later served as Director of the Centre for Management of Arid Environments in Western Australia. In 2005 he and Dr Peter Russell began a collaborative partnership with Omar Al Mukhtar University, helping OMU to establish a postgraduate program in rangeland ecology. From 2008 to 2011 Dr Norton served as the Rangeland Scientist and Eastern Region Manager for the Rangeland Development Project funded by the Libyan Ministry of Agriculture, Animal and Marine Wealth. His professional interests focus on grazing management and rangeland monitoring. He has extensive experience in characterizing and researching rangeland ecosystems in both western and developing countries, in the latter case in the context of agro-pastoral production systems in which livestock and farming are closely integrated. He has worked in more than 10 countries, including countries in South America, North Africa, the Middle East and the Sahel.
